Gel Treatments for Lips

Possible risks of treatment include:

• Bruising. This is the most common risk and will fade over time.
• Redness. Usually mild and goes away after a few hours.
• Mild pain or swelling around the areas treated that should resolve within a few days.
• Lumpy appearance under the skin, which may need a reversing agent to rectify.
• Skin rashes and itching. The occurrence of itching is rare and your treating aesthetician should be contacted if you experience this.
• Infection.
• Lost blood flow at treatment area leading to skin necrosis.

Gel treatments for lips are suitable for both men and women who want to increase volume to their lips, address lost volume, correct asymmetry or enhance the overall balance of their features, and smooth fine lines around the mouth. Gel treatments should not be used if you have active skin cancers within the treatment areas; open wounds or sores; irritated skin within the treatment zone; an allergy to stainless steel or anaesthetics; a haemorrhagic (bleeding) disorder or haemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction; or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Avoid alcohol in the week prior to your treatment because it can increase the risk of bruising and swelling. Also avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks prior.

Numbing cream and local anaesthetic can be applied to the treatment area to improve comfort levels during the treatment. Treatment times vary from 15 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on the extent of the treatment. Some mild to moderate pain and discomfort are to be expected, although this varies depending on individual factors, such as pain tolerance level.

You will typically be able to return to your daily activities. For the first 24 hours after treatments avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area because this can cause uneven results or other adverse outcomes. Also avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-treatment. Do not apply makeup for the first 12 hours after your treatment or use facial products with retinoids or other potentially irritating ingredients. Aspirin and alcohol should be avoided for 12-48 hours after your treatment. Results can last between 6-18 months depending on a variety of individual and treatment factors.
