Bio-remodelling is used to address skin laxity and overall decreasing quality of the skin that occurs with ageing. Bio-remodelling treatments hydrate and lift the skin through the stimulation of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for the elasticity and firmness of the skin, and aim for structural changes in the skin over time.
Treatments target the quality of the skin at dermis (the inner layer of the skin) level and epidermis (the thin layer of skin above it), by triggering your own anti-ageing processes. Bio-remodelling can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by increasing skin hydration, and through the stimulation of collagen and elastin.
Bio-remodelling treatments can only be considered within the context of a consultation to determine suitability given your unique circumstances. To book your non-surgical consultation email us at [email protected] or call our Care Team on (02) 4002 4150.
All medical procedures carry risks. Possible risks associated with bio-remodelling include:
Incidents of inflammatory reactions (erythema, oedema, etc) sometimes associated with itching and pain to the touch may occur. These reactions may persist for 7/10 days or more.
Hardening or nodules may appear at the point of injection. I was also informed about very rare cases, as described in literature, of discoloration at the injection point, necrosis of glabellar area, abscess, granuloma and hypersensitivity, after hyaluronic acid injections.
Skin infection (cellulitis) which presents as hot, red, shiny skin and you may also be generally unwell. In the case of suspected infection following Profhilo, you should contact your practitioner but also seek medical assessment as soon as possible as you will likely need antibiotics. Occasionally infection can form a swollen collection called an abscess. In this case you again must seek urgent medical attention. If you suffer from cold sores (a herpes virus infection of the lip) these can sometimes be reactivated following injections. Occasionally people can develop an unwanted inflammatory reaction to Profhilo and this can lead to nodule formation called granuloma. These often present as a delayed complication several months after the treatment. Several treatment options are available for granuloma formation and you may require medical assessment. Sometimes people can faint or feel faint with injections.
Vascular (blood vessels) compromise or occlusion, where normal blood flow is reduced or blocked, which could cause pain, skin discolouration, or if not treated could lead to skin breakdown, scarring or tissue death. In rare cases if blood vessels that connect to the eye are blocked it could cause vision loss or blindness.
Allergic reaction to Profhilo, including anaphylactic reaction which would require emergency medical assistance and transfer to hospital. Rarely Profhilo can be injected into an artery blocking the flow of blood to the tissue being treated. This is known as vascular occlusion, if untreated it is serious because it can lead to death of tissue (necrosis) which may require reconstructive surgery to correct. In the rare event of vascular occlusion, it would be treated with emergency injections of a dissolving drug called Hyaluronidase. This is an enzyme that removes the hyaluronic acid occluding the blood vessel and can usually fully reverse the vascular occlusion leading to no long-term harmful effects. Your practitioner will be trained in how to use Hyaluronidase in an emergency, however if treatment with Hyaluronidase is not successful then you would require urgent medical assessment or assessment by a doctor who is a specialist in aesthetic medicine.
Common to Both Profhilo® and Profhilo Structura®
- Redness, swelling, tenderness or itching may occur at injection sites. This is common and usually settles within a few days.
- Bruising can occur. It may be mild or, in some cases, more noticeable and take up to 1–2 weeks to fade.
- Small lumps or bumps at the injection points can appear immediately after treatment. These usually resolve as the product disperses and can take up to 3 days.
- Temporary discomfort or tightness in the treated area is normal and typically improves within several days.
- Everyone’s response is different. Some people see changes in skin quality within a few weeks, while for others it may take longer.
Specific to Profhilo®
- Because Profhilo is injected with multiple fine needle points, you may notice tiny raised blebs (small mosquito-bite like marks) at each injection site. These usually flatten within 24–72 hours as the product spreads.
- Mild bruising at these points is more common with Profhilo than with cannula techniques.
- The skin may feel slightly warm or firm around the injection sites for a short period.
Specific to Profhilo Structura®
- Profhilo Structura is delivered deeper with a cannula, so injection-point bumps are less obvious, but you may have:
- Mild swelling, fullness or tenderness in the deeper tissue, which can last a few days longer than after standard Profhilo.
- A higher chance of bruising along the cannula track, as the instrument passes under the skin.
- Because it is placed into the subcutaneous layer, you may feel a slight heaviness or pressure sensation in the treated area for several days.
- Rarely, temporary asymmetry may occur if one side settles faster than the other; this usually resolves as the product integrates.
What to avoid following your Profhilo treatment:
Avoid alcohol
Alcohol increases dehydration levels, which you do not want to do during your aftercare regime. One of the best benefits of bio remodelling treatment (Profhilo) is extreme skin hydration. This makes your skin look healthy and plump, so do your best to avoid alcohol for as long as possible. There are no dangers with drinking alcohol, but if you’re spending money on skin hydration, it makes sense to limit dehydrating actions.
Avoid strenuous exercise
Strenuous physical activity should be avoided after Profhilo treatments for 24 hours. You need your skin to start to recover and adding sweat or heat will make things take slightly longer. Normal activities can be resumed 24 hours after treatment.
Avoid heat-inducing activities
You should avoid activities that induce heat, like; saunas, spas, hot water and hot showers. These activities increase the likelihood of bruising, so make sure to avoid them for 48 hours after your treatment.
Avoid wearing makeup
Our aftercare advice regarding make up is to avoid makeup for at least 12 hours after your Profhilo treatment. This gives the treatment area and injection site time to recover and not have any external irritants added to the mix. *Pro Tip: Get Profhilo treatments done in the afternoon so you can wear makeup as normal the next day.
Avoid certain other skincare treatments
You should avoid facials and skincare treatments that can be harsh on the skin for at least 2 weeks. Some of these include:
- Waxing
- Chemical peels
- Microneedling (skin needling)
- Microdermabrasion
- IPL
- Laser treatments
Give your skin a break and let the bio remodelling and hyaluronic acid work without competition.
Avoid dental procedures
For two weeks after the treatment due to risk of infection, increased inflammation, pressure and manipulation, and medication considerations.
Apply a cool compress (if needed)
If you’re experiencing any minor bruising or swelling from your initial treatment, you can apply a simple compression such as an ice pack or cold compression towel to the area to help minimise the swelling reduce bruising. This should only be done on the day of treatment, and you should make sure not to overdo it. 5-10mins every 30-60mins is fine.
Bio-remodelling treatments can be used on the face, the neck, decolletage, chest, stomach, inner arms, hands, and knees. Bio-remodelling can also be used to treat mild acne scarring.
Bio-remodelling treatments are not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is also not recommended if you have an active skin infection.
If you are taking medications, including antibiotics, it is important to share this information during your consultation.
Avoid alcohol in the week prior to your treatment because it can increase the risk of bruising and swelling. Also avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks prior.
Topical numbing cream can be applied to the treatment areas to improve comfort levels during the treatment. The hydrating effect on the skin can typically be seen within a few weeks, with skin feeling softer, smoother, and tighter. As the process of collagen and elastin stimulation occurs, final results will emerge over the following 5-6 months. The results are not permanent because the ingredients of the treatment are gradually absorbed by the body. Treatments are typically completed in a series of three, spaced one month apart, and can repeated every 6-12 months.
A consultation with a medical professional is required to determine if this treatment is appropriate for you. Under the 2024 TGA rules for cosmetic prescription medicine, we are unable to advertise the costs of our services that may include these medicines. Pricing information can be shared after a consultation has taken place and is dependent on your specific treatment plan. Email us at [email protected] or call our Care Team on (02) 4002 4150.
Bio-remodelling treatments can be paired with other treatments to address concerns associated with ageing and volume loss in the face.
