As we age the movement from our facial expressions can leave facial lines and wrinkles in the skin. These dynamic or movement lines are caused by a combination of ageing skin (less elastin and collagen) and the skin over our facial muscles stretching when our facial muscles contract into an emotion reflective expression (e.g., excitement, worry).
Typically, these areas include the forehead, frown lines, around the eyes (laugh lines or crow’s feet), and below the corners of our mouth. Through a series of treatments within a personalised treatment plan, these dynamic movement lines can be reduced while still allowing movement of the face.
Treatments for dynamic facial lines and wrinkles can only be considered within the context of a consultation to determine suitability given your unique circumstances. To book your non-surgical consultation email us at [email protected] or call our Care Team on (02) 4002 4150.
What the treatment involves:
The treatment involves several small injections with a very fine needle in the areas discussed in your treatment plan. You may feel some mild discomfort during the injections. The treatment usually takes about 15 minutes.
All medical procedures carry risks. With dynamic facial line treatments, possible risks include:
Possible risks of treatment:
The treatment may not work as well as you would like. For example, wrinkles may not smooth out as much as you were hoping for.
The treatment cause temporary drooping or raising of the eyebrows or corners of the mouth. We aim to avoid this through correct technique and minimal dosing.
Bleeding, bruising or infection, while unexpected, may develop at the injection site.
In some very rare cases, the anti-wrinkle injections side effects can spread to other areas and cause more serious complications. These complications could include; trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing due to the weakening of muscles.
Transient headache Flu-like symptoms may occur. Post treatment bacterial, and/or fungal infection, is possible
Occasional numbness of the forehead lasting up to 2-3 weeks.
Your practitioner will discuss these risks in more detail with you during your consultation, taking into account your individual circumstances and medical history.
Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
Post-operative instructions:
Stay upright: For the first four hours after the injections, it's recommended to remain in an upright position and avoid lying down. This helps to prevent the migration of the treating product to unintended areas.
Use ice packs (if advised): If your injector recommends it, you can apply ice packs wrapped in a cloth to the treated area. This can help reduce swelling and alleviate any discomfort. However, be sure not to apply excessive pressure or ice directly on the skin.
Be patient: The full effects of treating product can take several days to appear. It's essential to be patient and wait for the results to take effect which can take two weeks.
Follow-up appointment: If your treating practitioner has scheduled a follow-up appointment, make sure to attend it. This allows assessment of the results and address any concerns or questions you may have.
What to avoid after your treatment:
Avoid touching the treated area: To prevent the spread of bacteria and ensure proper healing, avoid touching, rubbing or applying makeup to the injected area for at least 4 hours after the procedure.
Avoid strenuous activities: Refrain from engaging in strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or activities that cause excessive sweating for the first 4 hours. Sweating can potentially spread the treating product to adjacent muscles.
Avoid facial treatments: Steer clear of facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or any other facial treatments for at least one week after injections. These treatments may increase the risk of complications or interfere with the results.
Refrain from alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 4 hours after the procedure. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of spread of the treating product.
These treatments are only suitable to target dynamic or movement fine lines. Static wrinkles are caused by a loss of elastin, collagen and fat in the skin, and are visible regardless of muscle action in the face.
These wrinkles are more suited to gel treatments that address volume loss in the face, or laser treatments. Other conditions can also be addressed by the products used to treat dynamic facial lines. These include severe underarm sweating and blinking that cannot be controlled (blepharospasm).
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding these treatments are not suitable for you.
They should also not be undertaken if you have active skin cancers within the treatment areas; an allergy to stainless steel; or a haemorrhagic (bleeding) disorder or haemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction.
Avoid alcohol in the week prior to your treatment because it can increase the risk of bruising and swelling. Also avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks prior.
Some of these treatments interfere with neural transmission by blocking the release of acetylcholine, which is the principal neurotransmitter at the neuromuscular junction, reducing muscle movement by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine. Over time, the treatments can relax muscle movement and minimise or smooth facial lines. Treatments typically take between 15 and 30 minutes. Minimal or no downtime is required immediately following the treatments. Generally, it takes 7-14 days for the results to take full effect, and the results duration is 2-6 months. How long the results last depend on factors such as, the strength of the muscles being treated, the amount of product used, and individual metabolism.

FAQs
No, these treatments cannot prevent future fine lines and wrinkles from appearing, although some treatments can slow down the formation of these by reducing the amount of muscle activity or movement in the areas treated.
For treatments that work on dynamic lines and wrinkles, most people see results 7-14 days after the first treatment, depending on the severity of wrinkles and your individual response to the treatment. Treatments can be undertaken once or repeated every 3-6 months as full movement returns to the treated areas.
Yes, however with these treatments that target facial muscles, the muscles in the treated areas will not be able to contract as strongly so movement will be limited or expressions not as pronounced as they were prior to the treatment.
