LED or Light-emitting diode therapy was originally developed by NASA to assist with growing plants in outer space. After discovering that exposure to the lights seemed to heal abrasions on the hands of the NASA scientists faster than normal, research into the medical purposes for LED light therapy started.
Today we know that LED light therapy can address signs of ageing, reduce inflammation in the skin, help with active acne and breakouts, and boost cellular regeneration and wound healing. For improvements in skin quality the 633nm wavelength can be used to encourage circulation and collagen production. The 590nm wavelength can be used to increase skin hydration, address thickness and delivers redness reduction. The 830nm wavelength targets all skin cells from superficial to deep, including bone, assisting with healing (e.g., bruising), inflammation, suppresses the formation of hypertophic scars, controls infection and helps with pain. LED light therapy with an 830nm wavelength can also assist with reepithelization after ablative laser resurfacing.
LED therapy is typically safe and painless. Like all devices it is important to adhere to the treatment guides around distance from the device and lengths of treatments. The Avery team will be facilitating your treatment to ensure the guidelines for safe treatment are adhered to. If your face is being treated you will also be given some goggles to wear during your treatment.
Due to the nature of LED therapy, photosensitising medications as well as illnesses that cause photosensitivity are considered contraindications to the treatment.
The skin of the area being treated should be free of make-up, creams, and sunscreen.
The area being treated is cleaned and any coverings are removed. The light is placed over the area and the treatment time can vary between 11 and 30 minutes. Most people experience some mild warmth from the light. The result of any treatment depends upon the individual skin metabolism of each person. It is important to understand that the speed at which results are achieved as well as the final outcome can never be exactly predicted.

LED therapy acts on the fibroblasts, or skin cells responsible for collagen production.
No, harmful ultraviolet rays are not present.
Yes, in particular the anti-inflammatory properties in the 520nm and 830nm wavelengths are helpful for skin sensitivity.
Yes, LED therapy can reduce inflammation and target bacteria, as well as strength capillary walls reducing the appearance of flushing and broken blood vessels.
It is safe to use with older or matured scars, however, scar optimisation is best achieved by using LED light therapy with wounds that have not yet healed or scarred. Other services may be more beneficial for treating already matured scars, such as laser treatments. Book a non-surgical consultation to discuss the best treatment option for your circumstances.
