Liposuction or “lipo” of the neck is commonly referred to as chin liposuction, as many patients request it to remove the appearance of a double chin, caused by excess pockets of fat tissue below the jaw.
Much like liposuction on other areas of the body, neck liposuction aims to remove excess fat underneath the superficial layer of the skin. Removal of this surplus tissue helps to reshape neck contours for a younger, more defined shape.
Dr Avery has over a decade of experience in plastic surgery and has been performing liposuction in Newcastle since 2013.
During your initial consultation, Dr Avery will assess your relevant medical history and before going any further, ensure that neck liposuction is a safe and appropriate procedure for you to have.
It is important to note that neck liposuction is intended to remove excess fat and may not be a solution for those with large amounts of loose or hanging skin around the neck. Liposuction may exaggerate loose skin and a neck lift may also be required to achieve a slimmer, more desirable result.
Dr Avery will listen to your individual concerns and together you can discuss your options, developing a personalised surgery plan which may include alternatives or any additional required procedures.
All neck liposuction procedures are performed under general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital, with appropriately trained support staff and anaesthetist.
Liposuction is a relatively simple procedure which involves physically removing fat from the body, while leaving the overlying skin intact. This is generally more effective for younger people with good quality skin, due to the skin’s natural elasticity and recoil properties.
A traditional neck liposuction procedure involves the surgeon creating a small incision below the chin, then injecting a fluid(tumescent) to numb the area and break down the fat to be removed. This fluid, along with the excess fat tissue is then removed via suction through a small, thin tube called a cannula.
The length of liposuction surgery will depend on the amount of fat tissue being removed and any additional procedures being performed. An uncomplicated neck liposuction procedure will generally last 1 hour with another couple of hours’ recovery time before the patient can go home.
If the skin around the neck has been stretched beyond repair, liposuction may work in terms of removing the fat, but unfortunately may not produce the desired result. In this case, some patients may choose to combine liposuction with other procedures such as a face and neck lift.
There will be some bruising and swelling after neck liposuction, which generally subsides about 2 weeks after the surgery. During recovery, patients may be required to wear a compression garment to provide support to the area and reduce post-operative pain or swelling.
Patients may be fit to return to work and normal activities within 3 days to 2 weeks after neck liposuction, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the physicality of their work.
A customised pain relief program will be created for each patient and issued before leaving the hospital. If circumstances change at any stage during the recovery period, then the pain medication can certainly be adjusted accordingly.
Scarring can vary depending on the amount of fat being removed and the patient’s skin quality. Fortunately, the 1 or 2 incisions made during neck liposuction are very small and hidden behind the ears or under the chin, so any scars are often minimally visible.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
