Face and Neck Lift
Face and Neck Lift
As we age, our skin loses much of its elasticity and certain areas of the face tend to droop, while all of those expensive cosmetics, creams, and concoctions fight a losing battle in the face of gravity. Wrinkles and loosely hanging skin can be exaggerated even further by weight loss or sun damage, making us look much older than we feel.
A face lift (upper rhytidectomy) or neck lift (lower rhytidectomy) tightens the skin in the lower part of the face from the cheeks extending down to the neck, smoothing out smile lines and tightening sagging jowls for a more youthful appearance.
At Avery Plastic Surgery, our face and neck lifting techniques aim to produce a natural-looking reversal of the ageing process, with very subtle scars hidden behind and in front of the ears.
Dr Avery has over a decade of experience in plastic surgery and has been performing face and neck lifts in Newcastle since 2013.
Face and Neck Lift Consultation
There are several surgical procedures available that aim to rejuvenate and lift different parts of the face. A neck lift and upper face lift may address the lower part of the face from the cheeks down, while a brow lift or upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin around the eyes and forehead.
If you are considering a face and/or neck lift, book a consultation with Dr Avery and together you can discuss the different options available such as a brow lift, eyelid surgery, or face or neck surgery, the role of anti-wrinkle injections and filler, developing a personalised treatment plan.
Face and Neck Lift Procedure
Full Face Lift
A full face and neck lift will require an incision under the hairline that begins at the temple and extends around the front of the ear, finishing at the base of the scalp.
Short-Scar Face Lift
A limited incision facelift technique begins in the middle of the ear and extends around behind the earlobe.
A neck lift incision will begin at the top of the earlobe and extend down to the base of the scalp.
Once the incision has been made, excess tissue and muscle underneath the skin may be removed or repositioned. The skin is then pulled back slightly tighter than before over the uplifted contours and trimmed before the incision is closed with sutures.
All of our face and neck lift procedures take place in an accredited hospital under general anaesthesia, with appropriately trained support staff. An uncomplicated face and neck lift generally lasts 3-4 hours, most patients will stay one night in hospital.
Face and Neck Lift Recovery
Patients recovering from a face and neck lift will be required to wear bandages and keep their face reasonably dry within the first week. There will be some bruising and swelling for about 2 weeks, after which you will begin to see the results of the surgery.
Patients may return to work and normal activities around 2–3 weeks after a face or neck lift, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the physicality of their work. Within the first few weeks, patients should sleep with their head elevated and avoid swimming, saunas, alcohol and makeup.
A customised pain relief program will be created for each patient and issued before leaving the hospital. If circumstances change at any stage during the recovery period, then the pain medication can certainly be adjusted accordingly.
Scars from face and neck lift surgeries are small and subtle, although the degree of fading can vary depending on how well your skin copes with scarring. Most scars from face and neck lift procedures will be hidden behind the hairline and around the ears.
