Dr Gary Avery is a Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who underwent over 17 years of intense training within surgery and plastic surgery before operating in private practice. He specialises in aesthetic plastic surgery (sometimes referred to as cosmetic surgery) and he has a passion for helping people. He is open and honest, gives straight forward answers to any questions you may have about surgery, and will be there to guide you through your surgical journey.
Dr Avery is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a member of the two premium professional bodies for aesthetic surgery in Australia. These are the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) and the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Dr Avery graduated from the University of Sydney in Medicine in 2001 and also holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy. Dr Avery decided to embark on a career in plastic and reconstructive surgery after training in the burns units of Sydney’s Concord Hospital and the Westmead Children’s Hospital. Caring for patients and families who were faced with the challenge of recovering from significant burns was a humbling and inspiring introduction to the specialty.
After completing his specialist plastic surgical training, Dr Avery gained additional experience in paediatric plastic surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and then in Sydney managing advanced head and neck cancer and its reconstruction, as well as hand, nerve and microsurgery. The link between reconstructive plastic surgery and excellence in aesthetic plastic surgery is well established. In 2013, Dr Avery relocated to Newcastle and has been helping patients of the Hunter region and beyond ever since.
Outside of medicine, Gary is the proud father of three boys. He also enjoys basketball, trail running, ultra-marathons and the beach. After relocating to Newcastle with his family he cannot imagine living anywhere else and feels privileged to be part of the local community.
