Our Community Commitment

The team at Avery Plastic Surgery feel honoured to be part of the Newcastle community, and believe it is important to give back to our local community in a genuine and tangible way.

Mark Hughes Foundation

Partnering with a Local Charity

We have chosen a local charity to partner with, the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF).  The MHF is a not for profit organisation formed in Newcastle by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Marks diagnosis with Brain Cancer in 2013.

Mark is a well-known and highly respected former Newcastle Knights Rugby League player, business and community identity who is undergoing treatment to fight brain cancer. The Mark Hughes Foundation has been formed to raise much needed funds to promote research, heighten awareness and support brain cancer patients (children and adults) and their families within the community.

Plastic Surgery can be performed when wounds to the scalp, from surgery to remove tumours, do not heal adequately. Plastic Surgeons can take living tissue from another part of the body, connecting the blood vessels and nerves so that the tissue can ‘live’ in its new home on the scalp.

We are involved in fundraising activities for the MHF, some of these have  included Dr Avery running the Sydney Blackmores Marathon, and donating funds from our Art Exhibition 2017. Dr Avery also donates $5 to the MHF for every private patient he operates on.  Dr Avery operates on well over 1000 private patients every year.

Supporting the Newcastle Art Community

Our beautiful Practice is a space where local artists can exhibit and sell their work without restriction by us, without cost to them or commission taken by us, and with our full support.  We currently have 8 local artists as part of our Artists in Residence programme:  Donna Buck, Sandy Lee, June Orr, Shelagh Lummis, Alison Pateman, Gordon Snow, Belinda Street, Gavin Vitullo. Our patients and the public are invited to browse and purchase the art work we have on display.

In August 2017, we hosted our inaugural Exhibition and raised over $15,000.00 for the MHF. Information about our artists can be found on our Exhibition page and on printed brochures in our Practice.
